The story of two professional baseball players from New York and their team. The best pitcher on the team is Henry Wiggen, and the worst catcher is Bruce Pearson. Pearson is not the best player on the team and is not even close to being friends with any of his teammates. Bruce finds out during the off-season that he has a disease that will kill him. Henry, who is his only true friend, vows to be there for him during his last season with the club. At different times during the season, Henry and his friends deal with Bruce's impending illness while also trying to make his last year special.
